Talking Stick
The Talking Stick has been used for centuries by Native Americans and others as a means to foster respectful listening in council and deliberations It has been adopted and adapted in many ways, but its core power remains as a way of honoring a respectful relationship between speaker and listeners so that everyone feels included, valued, and understood.
The Tales & Trails Storytellers invite all Poetics participants to share in the creation of a Poetics Conference Talking Stick. Bring a little token (a charm, a button, bead, piece of fabric - anything that can be tied or strung), and at some point during the conference, attach it to the talking stick, which will be held in the "Speakeasy" by the poets and storytellers. We will also bring an assortment of beads, etc, that you can use.
As our connections with each other grow at the conference, as we speak with each other, in scheduled and spontaneous encounters, we will be affirming and honoring each other and creating a beautiful tangible representation of our time together. The Talking Stick will remind us that in the spirit of Ubuntu, "I am who I am, because of who we all are together."
