The Talking Stick has been used for centuries by Native Americans and others as a means to foster respectful listening in council and deliberations It has been adopted and adapted in many ways, but its core power remains as a way of honoring a respectful relationship between speaker and listeners so that everyone feels included, valued, and understood.
The Tales & Trails Storytellers invite all Poetics participants to share in the creation of a Poetics Conference Talking Stick. Bring a little token (a charm, a button, bead, piece of fabric - anything that can be tied or strung), and at some point during the conference, attach it to the talking stick, which will be held in the "Speakeasy" by the poets and storytellers. We will also bring an assortment of beads, etc, that you can use.
As our connections with each other grow at the conference, as we speak with each other, in scheduled and spontaneous encounters, we will be affirming and honoring each other and creating a beautiful tangible representation of our time together. The Talking Stick will remind us that in the spirit of Ubuntu, "I am who I am, because of who we all are together."

Martha Boesing’s new, deeply moving play, SONG OF THE MAGPIE is about a 69-year-old woman who goes out to experience the world as a homeless person. Growing out of the work of the Faithful Fools, a San Francisco-based organization that enables non-homeless people to go out into the streets of the Tenderloin and live there for a day, or in this case a week, the play portrays the dangers, hardships and unexpected humanity that is found there.
“SONG OF THE MAGPIE is a masterpiece of homeless drama. It conveys both the individual’s harsh experiences on the streets, along with the political injustices perpetuating homelessness. Most importantly, Boesing somehow reveals the inward fears and joys and the hidden, deep emotions that very few artists could render so well on stage” (Street Spirit, March, 2006).

“The fact that grief is a normal reaction to loss doesn’t make it any easier to go through,” according to Antonio Sausys, a specialist in yoga and meditation for those experiencing grief. He says, “Yoga can be instrumental in addressing the symptoms of grief because it focuses on mind, body, and spirit, the three areas where grief manifests—and often goes unacknowledged.” Antonio’s unresolved grief related to his Mother’s early death prompted him to develop a yoga and meditation practice to address the physical, mental and spiritual symptoms of grief that often go acknowledged. His Father’s cancer inspired him to create a Yoga for Cancer program, the motto of which is ‘Spirit can’t have cancer.’
